Dr. D.Y Patil Hospital at Nerul, Navi Mumbai

2004
can our design contribute to good health?
The brief was to design a large 30,000-sqm teaching hospital with almost free treatment for around thousand out patients and five hundred inpatients amidst an urban concrete surrounding. The main design parameters were providing a healthy atmosphere, lots of natural light and ventilation, nature and to provide good, direct, short circulation linkages between various easy to locate functions.
A basic shape in plan was derived from the design parameters. Large courtyards between the wings and the smaller courts within them provide green soothing relief. Light airy green terraces are created with shading pergola that would soon be covered with green creepers. The design of the hospital creates a healthy environment that contributes to the healing process, thus has become a green, healthy statement amidst the dense unhealthy, urban sprawl.
